Dinner Out

My daughter and I went to Morton's in Vienna last night for a delicious dinner. An ice cold martini with olives followed by scallops, spinach, mushrooms, and asparagus and to top it all off we enjoyed a melty chocolate cake. As always, it was disappointing to see how many people just don't seem to enjoy putting on something attractive when they go out. Many people were paraded by our table on their way to be seated and it was sad to see so many hoodies, polo shirts, sack dresses, boring tee shirts and dumpy jeans. Why? Why? Why? I think that fashion is a bit on the fun side and that there is pleasure in putting together an outfit when I go someplace special. I realize it takes some effort to get dressed nicely but it doesn't take that much to make yourself look sharp, does it?

Loving Summer!

I just love summer this year as it has been soooo lovely with low humidity and all around fab weather. I also love the summer time because it is so easy to get dressed. Light, bright, easy colors in feather weight fabrics are all around. Jeans and cute tee shirt with some strappy sandals with sea shells on them. A striped halter dress with some fun wedges. Bright color earrings with my hair plopped up on top of my head. Always carrying a sweater because it is so cold when ever I go inside a building. Sheesh, the a/c is blowing like mad all the time and I wonder why people like it so very cold, winter is bad enough without making it cold even in the summer for crying out loud. I really enjoy dressing people for all sorts of summer events too; Picnics, graduations, family reunions, dog fights, weddings, special dinners with that certain someone, drinks with friends, etc. Mmm, Popsicles, fresh fruit galore, watermelon, tomatoes, iced lemonade, barbecue (and the delight of watching lightening bugs glisten in the dark), ice cream cones, seafood, staying out late after dark, gossiping with friends, skinny dipping (where is that happening?), going to the beach, gazpacho, big designer shades. Oh, I could go on and on and luckily summer has only just begun...(no matter that malls dump all their summer clothing one week into the program) there are still quite a few delightful hot summer weeks, days and nights still to welcome. My favorite thing of all is to dine al fresco.

The South Beach Tight Dress Party!

South Beach Tight Dress Party

Wednesday - June 17th 6p.m. till 8 ish
Why, you might ask, is New to You having a tight dress party? Liz is leaving soon for Miami, Florida...South Beach to be exact. In a fond farewell we are having a "tight dress party" in her honor. So grab your girdle (now known as Spanx) and stuff your booty into a tight dress. It's all in good fun...meet, mingle, shop, drink, hold in that tummy, and squeeze those glutes.

For those of you who do not know Liz.. don't let that stop you...we would be pleased to see you strut your stuff. Space is limited so respond soon.

International Women's Day

International W omen's Day started back around 1911 to celebrate women throughout the world and to appreciate their spirit, drive and desire to be treated equally. I started to think off all the women that I have admired throughout my life and I wrote a number of the names down below. I realized that I had one heck of a list working and thought I would share it. So who have I forgotten? I'm sure so many inspirational women have been left off of this list. I would love to see who you think should be added. So, which women have inspired YOU in your life?

Stifel & Capra

Stifel and Capra has the coolest concept and delivery of a shop. Not only is in the glorious historic white house that graces Broad Street just one block away from us at New to You, but Theresa has polished and painted the grand dame so she looks lovely and light.
There is a fun variety of jewelry, vintage clothing and bric-a-brack; as well as some beautiful paintings and photographs from local artists.

Liz and I popped over to say hello and low and behold we both found something we just had to have. I purchased a lovely green necklace for my daughter and Liz bought some fab turquoise dishes for her retro kitchen.
As always, a small town can bring all sorts of delightful talents together to titillate the taste of various shoppers.
We understand that there will also be some workshop classes to be taught as well as an artists' studio upstairs.
Congratulations and job well done.
You can find Stifel & Capra at 260 West Broad Street, Falls Church, Va 22046

St. Patrick's Day

How to Avoid those pesky pinchers!

-Even if your closet isn't full of wearable green pieces

If you can't find the perfect green frock, incorporate shades of green into your beauty regime for the day! We understand it seems a bit risky, as green makeup tends to bring scary images of Poison Ivy and senile old ladies! However given the many different products and variety of formulas from sheer to shimmery to bright concentrated pigments, not to mention the large spectrum of clover - inspired shades to choose from, it's actually simple to incorporate green into your makeup routine no matter how subtle or striking you'd like the look to be. Bolder beauties can slick a sparkly green nail polish, or even attempt to pull off a green- tinted lip-gloss, and another option would be to try a smokey eye effect with a dark green eyeshadow!

WARNING: We wouldn't recommend wearing all of these products at once!

Resale in New York

My daughter, a couple of friends and I went consignment shopping in New York City and Brooklyn recently and had a fabulous time. It was so exciting to see how popular resale shopping is in a big city. Every shop we went into had a mass of people scooping up all sorts of fun bargains and great style. We saw everything from pure vintage to designer labels to an eclectic mix of medicore to one of a kind fashion. It was such a good time to find people that are interested in refining their own look instead of just following whatever is dictated by the big chain stores of the moment. Everyone of us managed to pick up a number of pieces that made our hearts go pitter patter; from purses, to boots, to sweaters, to colorful tops we just shopped, shopped, shopped until our time was done. I managed to pick up a number of business cards while shopping so will make sure to give you some names of the shops we enjoyed the most the next time I blog.
